I AIASEAS Symposium | TLSA Iberoamerica 2026
The Ibero-American Association for Southeast Asian Studies and the Timor-Leste Studies Association – Iberoamerica are organising the international symposium “Timor-Leste and Southeast Asia as fields of reflection: multisituated perspectives”. The event will take place on 4 September at the Complutense University of Madrid, in a hybrid format, following the European Association for Southeast Asian Studies (EuroSEAS) conference.
This symposium proposes considering Timor-Leste in the context of the island of Timor and the Southeast Asian region, particularly from the perspective of ASEAN, as spaces for production and reflection in the field of social and human sciences in their theoretical, methodological and relational interactions. The diversity of social, cultural, religious and political realities in Southeast Asia simultaneously brings together and differentiates the territories and nations of this region. The central theme of this symposium is to understand the social dynamics in constant flux and transformation, based on existing diversity. In addition, the symposium considers the global, historical and contemporary connections between Timor-Leste and Southeast Asia with other regions of the world, from Asia, Africa and Europe to the Ibero-American context.
